A short reflection and prayer for this month
OCTOBER
“They shall perish, but thou shalt endure…
thou art the same, and thy years shall have no end.”
Psalm 102:26-27
As summer leaves, autumn reminds us that nothing remains the same.
The days shorten, the light fades, and the leaves fall. The world around us changes - almost imperceptibly at first. Then one day we notice that it is dark at 5:00pm, a coat is needed when leaving the house, and just like that, the light and warmth of summer have given way to something different. Moods shift. Seasons pivot. Circumstances alter. People change. Even our understanding of who we are can differ from one season of life to another. Yet, God remains the same.
Sometimes we read the Bible in awe, in reverence, in astonishment, and maybe with incredulity. The times, traditions and customs can seem so foreign and far removed from our own lives today. Nevertheless, the people we meet in Scripture lived with many of the same uncertainties we do. They knew joy and disappointment, hope and fear, beginnings and endings. They experienced changing circumstances and seasons they could not control. And through it all, they encountered the same God.
The Psalmist understood something of the frailty and uncertainty of life, recognising that everything created is in constant flux. This is in stark contrast to the immutability of God. The God who walked with Abraham, spoke with Moses, met Hagar in the wilderness, called Mary, is the same God who drew near to us in Christ.
The same God who met them meets us.
The same God who called them calls us.
The same God who was with them is with us.
And the same God who so loved the world is loving us today.
As believers, we can have a quiet confidence that while everything around us changes, God does not. He is the solid foundation upon which all things can be built. He does not become less faithful because our circumstances have changed. He does not become less present because we do not understand His ways or His thoughts. He does not tire of us, have a bad day, or cancel His plans because something unexpected has happened. He remains.
We do not have to know what the next season will bring before we step into it. We do not have to understand every change before we trust Him through it. So, when everything around us shifts, settles and is shaken again, hold fast to what remains.
His Word remains.
His promises remain.
His faithfulness remains.
His love remains.
Heavenly Father,
We come before you in awe and reverence,
thankful that You remain the same.
Continue to reveal Yourself to us,
allowing us to comprehend the depth of Your love,
the richness of Your grace, and Your enduring faithfulness.
Renew our thoughts with Your truth,
and when uncertainty whispers lies,
let Your Word speak louder.
Teach us not to cling so tightly to what is passing, and to hold onto You.
Give us courage to release what we were not meant to hold,
and wisdom to walk faithfully through each changing season.
As the days grow darker,
remind us that You are still our light and always with us.
And when everything around us shifts, settles and shakes again,
keep our hearts anchored in You.
For You are the God who remains the same yesterday, today and forever.

A place where faith begins to grow. Our Sunday School creates a safe, fun and faith-filled space for children to explore the stories of the bible, learn about Jesus, and grow in God's love.
