Choosing our friends and those closest to us should be a prayerful endeavour. A good friend can shape your character, influence your outlook, and even change the way you carry yourself. When we consider Christian fellowship, it is often imagined as warmth and agreement: shared prayer, encouraging words, laughter, and the comfort of being among people who understand our faith. These aspects are true and precious gifts. However, biblical fellowship asks something more of us than simply enjoying one another’s company. Iron sharpens iron.

In the ancient world, iron was often sharpened through contact with another piece of iron. The process involved friction and the gradual removal of small amounts of material from both pieces, yet through that contact both were kept sharp and effective. This is a vivid image - iron does not sharpen iron from a distance. There must be contact. The friction is real, and there may even be sparks. In this sense, true sharpening is mutual, reciprocal and purposeful. It is not one person grinding another down; criticism disguised as truth; or words and actions intended to wound rather than restore.

In recent times, we have become so accustomed to avoiding discomfort that we only allow people close enough to praise and affirm us. We welcome encouragement, but what happens when fellowship requires honesty or accountability?  Scripture calls us to restore one another gently, to bear one another’s burdens, and to encourage one another towards love and good works. We are called to love each other well.

Love refuses indifference. We belong to one another - not in an ownership or controlling way, but we are called to care. Joy, pain, struggles, wellbeing and restoration all matter.  We need people who will encourage us and challenge us; comfort us and correct us; celebrate us and tell us the truth. And perhaps the question we should ask ourselves is not only, “Who is there for me?” but also, “Am I willing to be there for someone else?”.

The people God has placed around us are not simply companions for the easy parts of the journey. Sometimes we need a hand to hold us up. Sometimes we need someone to walk beside us when the road is difficult. And sometimes, we are called to be that someone. We were never meant to walk the Christian life entirely alone. It is here that we learn fellowship is more than proximity; it is shared life, shared encouragement, shared responsibility and, sometimes, the courage to draw close rather than look away.  And through the occasional friction of honest and loving relationship, God may use us in one another’s lives, as He gently sharpens and shapes us into who He is calling us to become.

So, let us be willing to love deeply enough to speak truth with grace, humble enough to receive correction, gentle enough to restore, and faithful enough not to look away when a brother or sister needs us.
