Baptism
A new beginning in God's family.
“He that believeth and is baptised shall be saved”
Mark 16:16a
Whether you are bringing a child or exploring baptism as an adult, St Michael the Archangel Church is here to welcome you into the family of faith, with joy and care.
What is Baptism?
- Baptism is a ceremony that marks the start of the journey of faith with God, and symbolises becoming part of God’s family.
- It is an important observance that involves making serious promises and declarations of faith before God and witnesses.
- Friends, family and the community of the church also make promises, with the baptismal candidate, of support and prayers for the future.
The Church of England requires a minimum of three godparents for each child’s baptism. With at least two of the same gender as the child. However, if this is not possible one godfather and one godmother will suffice. Parents and godparents are required to prepare for the baptism to ensure they understand the lifetime commitment of the baptism promises.
Who can be baptised?
- Babies and young children, whose parents want to begin their child’s life in faith.
- Older children and teenagers, exploring baptism for themselves.
- Adults, perhaps coming to faith later in life or seeking a new beginning in Christ.
Adults can be baptised and this process is seen as a public declaration and a significant step in their commitment to the Christian faith. Adults seeking baptism are encouraged to consider a combined baptism and confirmation, as both are important in the Christian journey. Baptisms for adults do not require godparents. However, godparents can still be involved if desired.
If an adult has been baptised in another Christian denomination that recognises the Trinity, it is not necessary to be baptised again in the Church of England. However, if that adult has not been confirmed they should be prepared for Confirmation.
You do not need to be a regular churchgoer to enquire. Baptism is open to all, and we will support you wherever you are starting from.
