Confirmation

A sacred step in a lifelong journey of faith.

“Fear not: for I have redeemed thee, I have called thee by thy name; thou art mine.”

Isaiah 43:1

Confirmation is a firm commitment to follow Jesus Christ, and is a special step in the Christian journey – a time to affirm the promises made at baptism. At St Michael the Archangel Church, we invite anyone who feels ready to take this next step of faith.

What is confirmation?

Confirmation is seen as the sealing of the baptismal covenant, by affirming all of the promises made at baptism.                                                        If you were baptised as a child your parents and godparents made these promises on your behalf. At a confirmation ceremony, the individual makes these promises for themselves. It is often considered as an important step for those who would like a formal way of acknowledging their Christian faith.

Confirmation is not a requirement for being a member of the Church of England. However, for those wishing to partake in Holy Communion/The Eucharist or embark on certain leadership roles in the Church of England, it is a requirement.

Who can be confirmed?

  • Anyone who has been baptised and wants to take the next step in faith.
  • There is no fixed minimum age for confirmation however, the candidate must be ready to make life-long promises to not only themselves, but to God.

What happens next?

To prepare for confirmation, the individual participates in a preparation course - with members of the clergy. This helps them to explore their faith through prayer, reflection, bible study and walking out their Christian beliefs in daily life.
